REPOST FROM Robert Maulana Marohombsar Alonto:
I’m back on line. Our phone was down again and so was our internet connection. Now they’re back, Alhandulillah. Despite the horrible calamity that struck Northern Mindanao, especially Cahayan de Oro and Iligan City, people still tend to show their nasty and ugly side. My brother was a victim of the flood. He practically lost his home and all his possessions. But that’s not the point. The other day, he and his family were informed by a close relative that a vacant house that they can rent was available at Golden Glow Subdivision jsut near SM CDO. When my brother, his wife and daughter went there, it was confirmed by the manager, after my brother explained that they are victims of the flood, that the house was available and they could rent it or even puchase it later on. So the family decided to transfer there while weighing the options of what to do with their damaged home and property. When they returned to their vehicle, my 8-year old niece happened to tarry behind a little bit and so the caretaker or manager of the subdivision asked her to which religion they belong. My niece said they were Muslims. Suddenly, the manager told her that they didn’t belong there and they couldnt’ stay in the subdivision because they don’t accept Muslims. My niece, almost in tears, went to her mom and dad and to told them what the manager said. My sister-in-law was almost hysterical as she rushed back to the manager or caretaker and almost gouged his eyes out. My brother, though angry inside him, was cool and pacified the wife. Just imagine a man telling an eight-year old girl that they couldn’t accept her and her family because they are Muslims. My niece, her mom and her baby brother had barely survived the flood on Dec. 16-17 and the trauma is still there. In her young age, my niece came face-to-face not with raging nature but with a bigoted and stupid Filipino whose subdivision he manages does not accept Muslims even in a time of calamity. When my sister-in-law narrated this to me the morning after the incident, she was still beside herself with anger. She is not a Moro and she belongs to a well-to-do Filipino Christian family in Cagayan de Oro. So I told her: “Now you know what we Muslim Moros are fighting for and why we want freedom.”
